Spring

Experience Maranza, Mount Gitsch and Val Giovo in the spring

Experience Maranza, Mount Gitsch and Val Giovo in the spring

The spring and the awakening of nature is a special time all over the world. Is there a superlative for special? Yes, the experience of spring in South Tyrol is in fact something truly special! While the mild climate in the valleys turns the meadows into a fresh green dotted with colourful flowers, the alpine regions still offer plenty of snow and excellent conditions for winter sports. At Mount Gitsch and in Val Giovo skiing is usually possible until mid-April. In higher ski resorts even until mid-May. And in the evening, you drive down to Bolzano, or Merano, and enjoy spring temperatures strolling through the city and maybe eat your first ice-cream of the year.

Late spring on Mount Gitsch

A little later in the spring, the bright South Tyrolean sunshine melts the snow away also in the higher regions. On Mount Gitsch, you may hike across lush green alpine meadows with a unique floral spectacle. The first young animals are driven to the pastures.

The village of Naz is a particularly great place to experience the apple blossom; and starting from June, the alpine roses are in full bloom – Mount Gitsch in the spring offers you sights that you will never forget.

Summer holiday in Maranza

Maranza, Mount Gitschberg and Val Giovo in the summer

In summer and autumn, most guests come to South Tyrol especially for hiking. As already described on our page “Hiking Holidays”, there are many hiking trails that in the summer lead you directly from Maranza to Mount Gitsch and on the peaks of Val Giovo. But of course, in the summer especially children love to spend time in and around the water, swimming, cooling down and boating. During the few rainy days in the summer, the Alpinpool in Maranza offers many attractions for the younger generation, with a lap pool and a children’s area. In fine weather, you may visit the outdoor pool in Rio di Pusteria or take a trip to the Alpe di Siusi and visit the Lake of Fiè for swimming and boating. A trip to the lakes of Caldaro or Monticolo in the South Tyrolean valleys takes only one hour from Maranza. And of course, for hard-core water lovers there are our many mountain lakes and pools in the icy mountain brooks. This is not for everyone, but those who dare will have an incredibly intense experience!

Worth seeing

Holidays in Maranza – Hiking destinations in the summer

With the Almencard Gitschberg Jochtal, you may enjoy free admission to more than 90 museums in South Tyrol. One of them is the Fortress Fortezza, a huge fortification with an informative permanent exposition, a Bunker Museum and interesting temporary exhibitions. The Novacella Abbey near Bressanone is a living monastery, connecting secular establishments – like a wine factory, a boarding school, and an electricity plant – with the monastic life. A guided tour shows you the incredible library, the cellar and the cloister garden.

Despite being such a remote and quiet corner of the Pusteria Valley, the holiday regions of Val Giovo and Gitschberg in the summer offer plenty of options and a surprisingly central location to many South Tyrolean hiking destinations.

Discover the South Tyrolean mountain world during guided hikes

Not everyone likes to venture out alone with a map and a tourist guide (in book form) or – nowadays – with a navigation device. If you wish to explore the mountains of the Pusteria Valley and the Dolomites in a safe way with a professional mountain guide, we will be happy to arrange a reliable guide. Simpler tours are often offered as group tours, while during more challenging hikes or climbing trails, a mountain guide will accompany maximum two persons. Please contact us if you wish to live a unique mountain experience under the guidance of a trained and experienced mountain guide.

Guided hikes with the Almencard Gitschberg Jochtal

With the Almencard Gitschberg Jochtal (which you receive from us), you may participate in various guided group tours and themed walks. Enjoy a panoramic hike in Maranza, the “Bee Trail” in Rodengo, the Farm Hike in the Fundres Valley, a guided alpine hike in Valles, a tour of the fortress in Rio di Pusteria or a sunrise hike to Mount Stoanamandl with an alpine breakfast at the lodge Nockalm.

Of course, we also offer recommendations for Nordic walking tours or excursions by mountain bike. There are excellent guides who will accompany you, if you wish to venture out on new paths. In the mountains you will always be on the safe side, if you have an expert or a specialist by your side and by booking a guided hike.

Autumn

Autumn hiking holidays in the mountains of Maranza

Your hiking holidays can take many shapes. In any case, the autumn is a great time for hiking in South Tyrol. At no other time of year, the weather conditions are as stable as in autumn. All alpine huts and lodges are still open, and the trails are still snow-free even in alpine regions. The clear air, which allows marvellous panoramic vistas, and the moderate temperatures make autumn the ideal time of year for a hiking holiday in the mountains.

Excursions during your autumn holiday in Maranza

In the nearby village of Vandoies, the “Loden World” will show you how a garment is produced from the sheep to the finished Loden coat. This is an interesting experience for children and adults. With the Almencard Gitschberg Jochtal, in the autumn you may participate in a hike across the golden autumn. Also the walk along the Way of St. James from Rio di Pusteria to the Novacella Abbey is a particularly beautiful experience, because of the wonderful autumn colours in the woods.

Other autumn events include the Gassentörggelen in Chiusa, the Bread and Strudel Market in Bressanone, the Bacon Festival in Funes or the cattle drive here in Maranza. Spend your hiking holiday in the mountains in Maranza starting from September, you will certainly not regret it!
